Rio Ferdinand: Ashley Young will be embarrassed following Celta Vigo injury

by Leo Nieboer

Rio Ferdinand believes that Ashley Young will be embarrassed after being forced off with a knock soon after coming on during Manchester United’s first leg 1-0 win over Celta Vigo in the Europa League final.

The Englishman, used on a sporadic basis this season, was thrown on for Henrikh Mkhitaryan after 78 minutes as the visitors pressed for another goal in the wake of Marcus Rashford‘s free kick.

But Young, to his visible frustration, was forced off just ten minutes later after picking up a hamstring knock whilst attempting to block a cross.

And Ferdinand, speaking on BT Sport, noted that Young, as a senior member of the squad, would have felt embarrassed to come off so soon after being introduced by Mourinho.

“Ashley is old school,” he said.

“He’s from the old era where it’s got to be a real injury for him to go off the pitch. I think he is someone who’s an experienced campaigner in that changing room.

“He won’t want to be walking off. To come on as a sub and be substituted, that’s an embarrassment.

“Your ego takes a bashing.”

This was not, at least to me, a moment of embarrassment for Young; this was a moment for concern, above anything. The Englishman almost immediately went down after over-stretching for a cross and you could tell that there was no chance he could continue.

Hamstring injuries – even slight strains – can be horribly precarious and often require a carefully orchestrated recovery process. Supporters, so soon after Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw all receive an early end to their season, will not want to see another member of the squad sidelined for United’s last few games.
