Rio Ferdinand explains why Jose Mourinho will be frustrated with Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

Rio Ferdinand believes that Jose Mourinho will be frustrated with Manchester United’s inability to take their chances against Celta Vigo in spite of claiming a 1-0 win.

Jesse Lingard spurned three fantastic opportunities whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan failed to take advantage of a one-on-one contest with keeper Sergio Alvarez.

Marcus Rashford, who also went close in the first half, finally broke the deadlock with a sensational free kick after 67 minutes, but the visitors could have easily had more.

And Ferdinand, speaking on BT Sport, noted that Mourinho would be disappointed to see his side waste so many chances in front of goal.

“Mentally they looked like a team who knew how to play this game,” he said.

“They were very good today. The only thing I would criticise would be the chances they didn’t take. They could have got this game out of the way and rested players for the next leg.

“It’s a bit of frustration on Jose’s part. But this was a very professional, very mature from this Manchester United team.”

This was a performance largely indicative of where United stand after almost a year under the 54-year-old: resolute at the back, powerful in midfield, attuned to controlling proceedings on the big stage, capable of creating chances but just not quite efficient enough in front of goal.

They are, in many ways, a decent side ready to burst into something potentially superb. Potency in the final third is indeed the only jigsaw left in the puzzle; supporters can only hope that they will receive a chance to see the final article in full flow.
