Rio Ferdinand: I’m surprised Jose Mourinho benched Michael Carrick

by Tanveer Arayan

Rio Ferdinand admits he was surprised that Jose Mourinho benched Michael Carrick against Celta Vigo in the Europa League semi-final.

The Englishman has been a vital player at Old Trafford this season but hasn’t been able to keep his place in the first-team as he enters the latter stages of his career.

Mourinho has previously claimed that if he had taken charge of the club any earlier then Carrick would be at the heart of his team, but he wasn’t in the starting line-up as Man United faced Celta Vigo in Spain.

Speaking prior to the clash, Ferdinand was surprised Carrick was not in action.

“I’m surprised maybe that Carrick isn’t getting a game here,” he said.

“His experience in a game like this.

“They need to keep the ball a little bit.

“But there are guys in there who can win the game for Man United. Rashford, Mkhitaryan, Lingard.

“They’ve got goals in there, backed up by Pogba.”

He’s been vital at controlling the ball and orchestrating the play from the centre of the park this season but he’s struggled with consistency as he’s had games which have either been spectacular or lacklustre.

Carrick has been a big player for Mourinho as he rotates his squad on two fronts, but his role in the side remains to be seen.
