Jose Mourinho has made it clear he intends to rest players against Arsenal who have had the most minutes for Manchester United in the last month, but who are those players?
Officially on paper, Eric Bailly has played more minutes (901) than any other Man United player in the last four weeks so he is the most likely player to be rested. Add in the fact he went off injured against Swansea before battling through to face Celta Vigo and you realise his inclusion against Arsenal would actually be more of a surprise than anything.
Next up is Marcus Rashford with 774 minutes of game time and given he hobbled off with a knee concern away in Spain, it is odds on Mourinho will leave him on the bench. If it gets to the last 15 minutes and United are in need of a goal then maybe Rashford will make a cameo appearance but unless he has to use him, I expect he’ll get a complete rest.
Jesse Lingard has played the third most minutes (687) in April and with the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and a returning Juan Mata available, Mourinho has options to use on the wings. Lingard’s frustrating finishing against Celta Vigo might be another reason why Jose would choose not to start Lingard.
And the other two players who played the most in April are Antonio Valencia (651 minutes) and Ander Herrera (630 minutes). With Valencia, Matteo Darmian could step in at right-back but who would play left-back? Potentially Daley Blind if Chris Smalling and Phil Jones both start at centre-back but we’re limited with our options in defence. The same goes for midfield; if Herrera doesn’t feature, Marouane Fellaini is banned and unless Wayne Rooney drops deep then we’re pretty much out of options there.
Who would you rest against Arsenal? Who would you like to see Mourinho start? Out of all the squad, these five players look the most likely to be given some time off ahead of Celta Vigo.
