Michael Carrick desperate to win the Europa League with Manchester United

Michael Carrick has expressed his personal desire to win the Europa League at Manchester United this season.

Jose Mourinho‘s men, following their 1-0 win over Celta Vigo last Thursday, will book their place in the Europa League final with a clean sheet against the Spaniards at Old Trafford.

Uncertainty continues to loom over whether Carrick, reportedly offered a one year extension by Mourinho earlier on in the season, will remain at the club ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

And the 35-year-old, speaking earlier this week, noted that, on a personal level, winning the Europa League would be a memorable achievement.

“I’m personally desperate to get to the final and to try and win it,” he said. “That’s the only thing that matters. Whatever competition you’re in, especially at this club, with the team we’ve got, we’re looking to win it. It’s a great opportunity.

“We’ll respect who is left in the competition – it’s not going to be easy and we’re not taking anything for granted at all – but that’s got to be the aim. There’s nothing else that matters.”

Mourinho – along with many supporters – will be desperate to see Carrick stretch his Old Trafford career into 2018, but it’s hard to ignore the romanticism of the Englishman concluding a lucrative career by lifting a European trophy.

He has, in many ways, always been more of a continental midfield architect than an English battering-ram; going out on the European stage, therefore, would be wonderfully fitting.
