Bastian Schweinsteiger has opened up about his struggles at Manchester United, claiming the decision to freeze him out was not Jose Mourinho‘s.

He left Old Trafford to join Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire in March following a difficult time at Man United since his arrival in 2015.

The German international had a relatively successful time under Louis van Gaal, but when Mourinho took over last summer, he had only made four appearances before his sudden exit.

Speaking about his time at Old Trafford, Schweinsteiger claims he has no ill-feelings towards Mourinho.

“It was not easy when I was training by my own for three months,” he said.

“[The decision not to play me] was maybe made by someone else without [Mourinho].

“I think after I trained and I played and he could see me and how I behave as a professional, he had a different opinion, so it was a little bit unfortunate.

“I think [it would be different] if we would have met in a different situation. It was [difficult], but I always believe in good things.

“And I was always dreaming about playing again for United and to help them and I was giving my best in training sessions as well.

“And at the end of the day, I was playing and I was scoring a goal as well.”

Schweinsteiger handled his exclusion like a true professional and it’s a shame that it didn’t work out at Old Trafford as the timing just wasn’t right.

Hopes are he can continue to build on his incredible career during his time in America as he possesses the talent to make a difference in the MLS.
