David de Gea 6.5 – Found himself bombarded throughout the first half hour and made some important saves, only to occasionally struggle with Spurs’ presence in the box. Received no help from his defenders for either goal.
Eric Bailly 7 – The only Manchester United defender to display any real grit at the back. Hassled Ben Davies and Heung-Min Son all afternoon and looked powerful going forward.
Phil Jones 5.5 – Much like his defensive counterpart, the 24-year-old offered little assurance at the back, losing Son and Kane on too many occasions and failing to maintain a stable position whenever the hosts bombed forward.
Daley Blind 6 – Did well to stop Kieran Trippier from delivering too many crosses but often found himself starved for options further forward.
Michael Carrick 5 – The Englishman’s poise at the base of midfield normally belies his age, but he looked decidedly out of step up against Spurs’ aggressive midfield.
Axel Tuanzebe 6 – Going up against this Spurs midfield would have been a challenge for most battle-hardened Premier League midfielders, let alone someone making just their second start in a Man United shirt. The 19-year-old undoubtedly struggled the tempo set by Mauricio Pochettino’s men at times but applied himself incredibly well and didn’t shirk from the challenge. A good learning experience.
Jesse Lingard 5 – Another United player nullified by Spurs’ tempo. Couldn’t really get anything going from the right hand side.
Wayne Rooney 5 – Did well to snatch a goal back for his side in the second half but watching the 31-year-old play is becoming more and more painful. Dramatically outmuscled, outpaced and ultimately out of his depth.
Juan Mata 6 – Very neat on the ball as always and notably determined to get forward when many opted to pass back, but couldn’t make it count in the final third.
Anthony Martial 7 – Found himself isolated as United’s attacking midfield triumvirate struggled but committed everything to the cause, bombing forward whenever he could and providing a sensational assist for Rooney’s tap-in.
