Manchester United ready to swoop for Real Madrid defender Pepe – report

by Tanveer Arayan

Manchester United are reportedly prepared to swoop for Real Madrid and Portugal defender Pepe, according to reports.

The 34-year-old, who arrived at the Bernabeu back in 2007, has only managed 13 appearances in La Liga under Zinedine Zidane this season.

Jose Mourinho, who worked with Pepe during his time at Madrid, will be seeking defensive reinforcements over the summer following lukewarm campaigns from both Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.

And according to Don Balon, Man United will swoop for the veteran defender over the transfer window.

Make no mistake: in the world of football, Pepe is about as nasty as they come. Going up against him requires both physical and mental fortitude; there aren’t many players better at making life hell for you than the Portuguese.

Bringing him to the Premier League, in spite of his age, would make perfect sense. Man United’s back line, with Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly at the centre, can be indomitable, but when either player finds himself sidelined there isn’t much in the form of an adequate replacement available.

And as the 54-year-old seeks to bolster his side’s mental approach ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, Pepe would serve as an ideal fit – almost like a Laurent Blanc figure, only Mourinho style: somebody capable of marshalling a back line and stirring opposition fans into a frenzy of anger as he does so.
