David de Gea hasn’t travelled with his Manchester United teammates for Wednesday night’s Premier League clash with Southampton at St. Mary’s.
Lots has been said over the last week over whether De Gea should get the nod over Sergio Romero in the UEFA Europa League final ahead after Jose Mourinho said the Argentinian goalkeeper would keep his place in the team.
De Gea started against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday but he won’t feature this week. What that means for his Europa League final chances remains to be seen. In his place, Kieran O’Hara has been given the nod.
Here is Man United’s travelling squad vs Southampton (via Manchester Evening News): Sergio Romero, Joel Pereira, Kieran O’Hara, Matteo Darmian, Axel Tuanzebe, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Demetri Mitchell, Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, Scott McTominay, Jesse Lingard, Marouane Fellaini, Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford
After two consecutive losses, United’s top four chances have gone but that was because Mourinho decided to put all his focus on the Europa League. That means there isn’t much anticipation for the Southampton game which could end up being a damp squib as far as entertaining football goes.
United have just two matches left before the Europa League final against Ajax and so long as there are no injuries then Mourinho will be happy regardless of the results.
We’ll bring you the full starting XI news on Wednesday night an hour before kick-off as always.
