Jose Mourinho: Timothy Fosu Mensah could play in Europa League final

by Leo Nieboer

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Timothy Fosu-Mensah could recover from injury in time for the Europa League final on May 24.

The youngster dislocated his shoulder during the dying stages of Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Manchester City last month.

Fosu-Mensah has made just three starts under Mourinho this season, making ten appearances overall prior to what was expected to be a season-ending set-back at the Ethiad.

But Mourinho, speaking ahead of his side’s clash with Southampton, noted that the Dutchman could return in time to feature against former club Ajax.

“Now we need everybody,” he said. “Fosu-Mensah is the only one who has a little chance to be for the final and even this kid is trying everything to be fit because the others are impossible.”

You have to admire Fosu-Mensah’s desire to work himself back up to fitness – way ahead of schedule, it should be noted – for the clash in Stockholm. The 19-year-old would have been the ideal type of player to use over the last few weeks as Mourinho diverted the majority of his resources towards reaching the Europa League final.

Whether he will start against Ajax, however, is another question entirely. Throwing somebody with minimal game time this season into a European final may be seen as an overly radical managerial decision, but perhaps his intimate knowledge of this Ajax team – consisting of players he played with not so long ago – could come in handy.
