Jose Mourinho confirms Daley Blind will start the Europa League final

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Daley Blind could start for Manchester United in next week’s Europa League final against Ajax.

The Dutchman did not travel with the squad to play against Southampton in the Premier League and was also rested in the defeat against Arsenal earlier in the month.

Mourinho would have liked to play Eric Bailly following his impressive debut season in England, but with him ruled out with a red card, the Portuguese boss claims Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are being tested to see if they can start alongside Blind in Stockholm.

Speaking about his selection, Mourinho claims players can force their way into the team if they’re in good form.

“Of course yes,” he said. “This is what they have been doing.

“Bailly is out so who plays, Smalling or Jones?”

Sergio Romero has already been backed to start and his incredible saves against Southampton will further reinforce Mourinho’s point, Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian will likely start at full-back with the likes of Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba, Marouane Fellaini, Marcus Rashford Jesse Lingard and Henrikh Mkhitaryan tipped to start.

Man United play their final game of the season against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday, just three days before the final and Mourinho will be hoping that no one else comes back with an injury.
