His contract runs until next summer with an option for another 12 months to 2019 and although many believed he’d be leaving after Mourinho took over last summer, he has in fact gone on to become an important part of the first-team.
The Spaniard has clearly been impressed by what the Portuguese boss is building at Old Trafford and wants to be a part of the team who are currently preparing for the Europa League final against Ajax in Stockholm on Wednesday.
Speaking about his future, Mata claims he’s focused on winning trophies at United.
“I’m happy here,” said Mata.
“I cannot control what people will think. It’s always been the same, every single summer. But I can control myself and my aim, and my head is focused on trying to win trophies here and still having a contract here.
“I’ve always said that since I came here it has not been the greatest moment in the club’s history. It’s been a different approach and a new stage after Sir Alex Ferguson. We’ve had a few managers, different players coming and going, but I feel really happy to be at this club.
“I feel privileged to play for Man United. It is something when I’m old I will always be proud of.
“And I keep believing and thinking positively about winning big trophies here. I’ve seen the fans behind us all the time, both in the good times and the bad times, giving us their strength, so I imagine myself with the fans really, really happy after winning big trophies, starting from this Wednesday but hopefully also in the following season.
“If the fans have been so good to us in not the best moments, I imagine myself in the best moments and it will be crazy.”
Mata is an incredible player and even though he’s been sidelined with an injury lately, there’s no doubting his impact in the side.
He has a great future ahead at Old Trafford and hopes are he can continue his rehabilitation as it’s a massive blow to have him out of action.
