Manchester United vs Ajax: Early confirmed squad news

by Sam Peoples

Here is all of the early confirmed squad news for Manchester United ahead of tonight’s Europa League final against Ajax.

Marouane Fellaini travelled with the Man United out to Stockholm and is widely expected to start tonight because his height will provide a real threat to an Ajax side who struggle with aerial battles due to having a small team.

Chris Smalling missed the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace but is back in the squad. Phil Jones played 90 minutes on Sunday so there are questions marks over whether he’ll be fit to start but Jose Mourinho will choose between the pair for Daley Blind‘s partner at the heart of defence.

Despite their strong performances against Crystal Palace there is no space for Demetri Mitchell, Scott McTominay or Josh Harrop, nor 16-year-old Angel Gomes. All four omissions were expected simply because there wasn’t enough space in the squad. Joel Pereira is in the 20-man squad but will miss out on a place in the final 18 unless David de Gea or Sergio Romero picks up an injury.

Jesse Lingard is expected to start ahead of Anthony Martial but Mourinho may surprise us all and go for the more attacking Martial as a statement of intent, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan almost certain to start on the right-wing.

We will bring you the confirmed starting XI an hour before kick-off at 18.45BST as usual.
