Manchester United interested in signing Benjamin Mendy

Manchester City and Manchester United are both battling it out to sign AS Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy, according to reports from France.

RMC Sport’s Mohammed Bouhafsi says Man City are closing in on a €45m move for Mendy but Man United are also interested in bringing him to Old Trafford.

Mendy, 22, has starred at left-back for Monaco this season and it’s a position where Jose Mourinho has struggled with all season, so it comes as no surprise to hear we’re looking out for a new one and Mendy was brilliant for Monaco.

Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian, Ashley Young and Demetri Mitchell have all featured at left-back at various points this year but nobody has been able to make it their own. Probably the best performance all year was Darmian in the Europa League final but he’s a right back by trade.

Mourinho has key areas to strengthen this summer as does Pep Guardiola and it looks like we might be going head-to-head with city for a couple of those players, Mendy being one of them after we were linked with Bernardo Silva last week too.

Lots of United fans will ask whether or not Mourinho should stick with Shaw and give him another season to impress but from the Mourinho I know after watching him for years, I’m not sure he’s going to be afforded that opportunity.
