Ander Herrera will snub any interest from Barcelona this summer – report

by Leo Nieboer

Ander Herrera will snub any approaches made by Barcelona this summer amid interest from Ernesto Valverde, according to reports.

Reports have suggested that Valverde, formerly of Atletic Bilbao and set to be announced as Barcelona manager on May 29, has expressed an interest in Herrera ahead of the summer.

The Spaniard has enjoyed his best ever campaign in a Manchester United shirt, making 51 appearances in total and claiming the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award last week.

And according to the Mail Online‘s Simon Jones, Herrera will reject any advances made by the Catalan club over the summer.

Herrera may have grown up in that unique hotpot of strictly Basque footballing culture – the exact reason why Valverde wants to place him at the centre of his plans at the Nou Camp – but he is very much a red nowadays.

The 27-year-old came from Bilbao blessed with strong lungs and a natural feel for the ball, but he initially lacked the grit – nasty side – needed to succeed at a club like United. Those two years under Louis van Gaal were, in many ways, an evolving process, hampered by the Dutchman’s inability to hand him a clearly defined role.

Under Jose Mourinho, however, he has fully attuned himself to the vicissitudes of English football, and with Champions League on the horizon you can’t see why he would suddenly turn his back.
