It was reported last month that Mourinho, keen on bolstering his defensive options over the summer, had opened fresh talks with Benfica, who have placed a £35million price-tag on the 22-year-old.
But according to the Mirror‘s Steve Stammers, Roma are willing to table £30m – £5m more than the current figure being offered by Mourinho – in order to secure Lindelof’s services for next season.
The 54-year-old faces a tricky decision over the next few weeks: does he ramp up the figure for Lindelof and end up paying the demanded £35m to guarantee his services, or does he look more locally, and perhaps more pragmatically, for a young, ebullient defender and sign Michael Keane instead?
It has been reported that United, who have a 25% stake in the fee for Keane’s next move, could secure the promising Englishman for just £25m this summer. Mourinho, therefore, will have to decide whether Lindelof is worth a full £10m more than the 24-year-old as he moves forward in the transfer window.
