Michael Carrick has signed a one-year contract extension at Manchester United to keep him at the club until 2018.
Carrick will have his testimonial at Old Trafford next weekend to celebrate his ten year stay at the club and Jose Mourinho‘s faith in Carrick means he will remain here for at least one more season.
Speaking about the contract extension, Carrick said: “What a fantastic way to finish off the season, with a new trophy in our cabinet. I am delighted that my journey with this great club is going to continue.
“My focus now is looking ahead to my testimonial match next Sunday; it will be a very proud moment for me and my family, and is the perfect way to top what has already been a great season. I am thrilled that the fans will also get to see our shiny new Europa League trophy on the day.”
And Mourinho is delighted that the veteran midfielder will be a United player next season too. He said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Michael over this past season. He is one of the true professionals of the game. Not only is he a great footballer, he is also a fantastic human being and a great role model to our younger members of the team. I am delighted he has extended his contract and I would like to take this opportunity to wish Michael all the best for his well-deserved testimonial match next Sunday.”
Carrick has won every trophy possible at United since he joined in 2006 and has been one of our best midfielders in the Premier League era. He hasn’t always taken the spotlight and been given the praise he richly deserves but he has in recent years, so I’m delighted to see him given a contract extension.
So long as we sign another central midfielder and can therefore use Carrick in the right way rather than every game, he’ll be a real asset to the club next season.
