He has allegedly discussed a potential move to Old Trafford with the Portuguese boss and a deal is now dependant on if both clubs can come to the agreement of a transfer fee.
Mourinho was said to be interested in signing Matic last year but Chelsea coach Antonio Conte was not willing to sell the Serbian, who has started in 30 out of 38 Premier League fixtures during their title-winning campaign.
However, Mourinho has told Matic that he is the holding midfielder who will allow Paul Pogba to move freely on the pitch, allowing him to focus on dictating the play.
Mourinho has left vice-chairman Ed Woodward a list of four priority players to sign this summer and it remains to be seen if Chelsea would let such a player leave, especially to their direct rivals.
Matic’s return brought balance to Chelsea’s midfield and it looks like the Portuguese boss could be set to sign a player which United have admired since David Moyes’ brief tenure at the club.
