Ryan Giggs thinks Antoine Griezmann to Man United could still happen

by Sam Peoples

Ryan Giggs thinks Manchester United’s almost desperate need for a lethal goalscorer means a move for Antoine Griezmann is still a distinct possibility.

Griezmann was widely considered Man United’s top target this summer but Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban was upheld this week and the Frenchman seemingly pledged his allegiance to the club soon after on his official Twitter page.

However, speaking to Sky Sports, Giggs said the need for Mourinho to strengthen his attackers could see United stay on Griezmann’s tale all summer long.

“I’m not so sure if we’ve heard the end of that,” he said. I think it’ll be ebb and flow during the summer, there’ll be lots of rumours.

“United need goals. All the teams I played in there were goals from everywhere. Sometimes you’d rely on a centre-forward for a season, but more often than not you had midfielders, even defenders, wingers and obviously the forwards all contributing.”

A long drawn out summer saga with Griezmann? Wonderful, that’s what we all want. There was blind optimism that United could try and seal a move for him in the first couple of weeks in the transfer window but alas that hasn’t happened and certainly isn’t likely now.

Atletico’s transfer ban has massively complicated the whole situation and does make an exit unlikely for Griezmann considering his loyalty to the club but I suppose there is always a possibility it could happen and Giggs wants to see United bring in a new goalscorer.

He added: “They lack goals. There was too much dependence on Ibrahimovic and obviously, they’ll miss him at least for the start of the season.

“They need to bring players in who’ll score goals, and one goalscorer who’s going to get 20-plus.”

Giggs is right because our biggest issue last year was with the finishing. Had somebody been more clinical across the season we would have been right up there challenging for the Premier League but our conversion rate was woeful and nobody in the top six scored less goals than us (54) in the Premier League.

Will that goalscorer be Griezmann? Well, us fans were certainly hoping so but even if it isn’t Jose Mourinho will be bringing in a top class goalscorer at some point this summer and if that player can bag 20+ goals next year in the Premier League, we will be all set to compete on all fronts again like we should be doing as Manchester United.
