Antoine Griezmann has confirmed he will stay at Atletico Madrid following the Court of Arbitration’s decision to uphold their transfer ban.
Griezmann, 26, was widely considered to be Manchester United’s top transfer target this summer and the Frenchman helped fuel the transfer rumours in the last few weeks with comments about joining the club as well as a subtle hint in a Huawei advertisement.
However, Atletico’s inability to sign any new players until January has seen Griezmann pledge loyalty to Atletico – at least for the time being.
“The CAS sanction has been passed. I’ve decided to stay,” Griezmann told Telefoot.
“It’s been another good season and hopefully we can make some good signings in January.
“It’s a tough moment for the club, for my team-mates, and it would be a low blow to leave now.”
Fair play to Griezmann for showing a bit of loyalty. It’s rarely seen in the modern game with money instead being the driving force behind most major transfers and for Griezmann to stay at Atletico shows he is interested in more than just the pay packet as a footballer and that’s something all fans love to see. If a United player did it we’d be lauding him, so fair play to Griezmann in this case.
That being said, I do find it a bit strange there is this U-turn all of a sudden. Atletico had over ten times as many serious cases against them in regards to signing U18s players incorrectly as Real Madrid and Barcelona did, so they were always likely to lose the appeal. Surely Griezmann would have known this all along too?
Either way, the Griezmann stories can be buried now. He’s not joining. Weirdly, Atletico’s transfer ban has served them well in that they would have otherwise lost Griezmann to United and it’s just a real shame for us that because of that ban we’re missing out on signing one of the world’s best players. Onto the next one.
