Former Southampton striker Matt Le Tissier has explained where Manchester United must improve ahead of the 2017/18 season, pointing towards the need to sign a new centre back to partner Eric Bailly.
And Le Tisser, speaking to Sky Sports, has made note of the need for Mourinho to further bolster his defensive frontier this summer.
“It’s going to be an interesting transfer window for Manchester United. First of all, I think they need a standout centre-back,” he said.
“They’ve got numbers in that area and I think Eric Bailly will be decent but they will need somebody to partner him long-term.
“They’ve got a couple of young lads coming through as well but again they’ll be used as back-ups, so they can probably move a few of the other ones on.
“Further up the pitch, I like Juan Mata and Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be better next season but I still think they could do with another option behind the striker with Wayne Rooney unlikely to still be there.
“In terms of strikers, I think we’ll see Marcus Rashford play more centrally next season.
“If Zlatan Ibrahimovic can prove his fitness then he’ll stay on and we’ll see a better season from Anthony Martial. So even if they can’t get Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid, I don’t really see too much happening in that area.”
Supporters can expect to see more defensive reinforcements arrive under the close watch of Mourinho: the Portuguese, a master of building footballing powerhouses, is acutely aware of the importance of building from the bottom up, and the sight of either Keane or Lindelof arriving would be a promising nod towards the future.
A replacement for Michael Carrick, who must only have two seasons left in his legs, also feels somewhat imperative: Marco Verratti, Tiemoué Bakayoko, Eric Dier and Fabinho, who can also feature at full back, are all potential options.
