Several reports have suggested that a £35m deal between the two clubs over the 22-year-old’s signature has been reached.
Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira reportedly flew to Manchester last week to discuss a fee for Lindelof, who has made 72 appearances for the Portuguese champions since making his debut aged 19.
And according to Correio da Manha, Lindelof will be officially announced as a Man United player on June 9.
Supporters eagerly awaiting transfer news will have to wait out the next few days as the majority of players divert their attention towards various international commitments. After that, however, comes a month-long period before pre-season which will see the bulk of transfers being completed.
And Lindelof, following a second season as Benfica’s first choice centre-back that saw him pick up a second Primeira Liga title, appears to be on the cusp of embarking on a new challenge at Old Trafford.
The immediacy with which the deal has been completed points towards Mourinho seeing the area of centre-back, following unconvincing campaigns from Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, as the area most in need of addressing over the summer.
Supporters can now look forward to the tantalising prospect of seeing Lindelof line up alongside Eric Bailly next season – a partnership that could blossom into something truly special.
