And in spite of what was a disappointing season for Granada, relegated with just four wins, Pereira excelled throughout, completing the fifth highest number of take ons in La Liga and making 37 appearances.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the Brazilian made it clear that he was aiming for a place in the first team this summer.
“I played out wide in the beginning then, after that, I played more as a no.10 and, then in the last two or three months, I’ve played as a central midfielder,” he said.
“It went well and I think I have found another position. I think it’s good to be more of an all-round player and Granada have used me in every midfield position so I am happy the coach trusted me and I did my job. It’s important but, as always, I will go where the manager needs me, I will play in any position and feel I can fulfil many roles.”
“I think I’m ready now. I have played over 2,000 minutes now in men’s football, in La Liga, and I did quite well. I feel I’m ready, more than ready, to play men’s football now. I am more mature as well, physically and mentally, and I am ready to come back and hopefully push to play next season for United.”
Mourinho will want to add something different to his attacking midfield next season following an opening Premier League campaign hallmarked by a dearth in goals. The main way to address this, of course, is through consulting the chequebook, which the Portuguese will undoubtedly do, leaving Pereira with a tricky but by no means impossible task over pre-season.
A season in La Liga, even with a side rooted to the bottom of the table, would have taught Pereira something new and instilled an altered perception of how to play the game. The alacrity with which he changed positions at Granada would have only further enriched the Brazilian’s footballing education in a country known for producing players with an almost heuristic understanding of how to handle the ball.
This has, in fact, always been the youngster’s main strength, and he’ll need to place it at the forefront of his game if he is to breach the first team this time around.
