The pair came under scrutiny during the closing stages of the season following dramatically substandard performances against Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, and their place in the side could be threatened further this summer by the impending arrival of Benfica’s Victor Lindelof.
They will receive a chance to impress Jose Mourinho at Hampden Park on Saturday before jetting off to Paris for a friendly with France on Tuesday.
Jones, whose last goal came during the David Moyes era, was seen directing home a splendid flicked finish as Smalling watched on during training.
If you watch this video closely, you can see the exact moment when Smalling realises he will now have to put up with Jones harping on about that finish all week. In the distance, the reaction from those watching on tells you that Jones probably hasn’t scored a goal in training since, well, probably the Moyes era too.
On a more serious note, Jones and Smalling will actively welcome the chance to play as much as possoble. The same cannot be said for some Manchester United players after a season consisting of 64 matches, but the pair will still be working themselves up to speed after being rushed back from injury by Mourinho last month.
More importantly, however, clashes with Scotland and France provide crucial opportunities for the pair to demonstrate their worth to Mourinho ahead of a summer that will most likely see the 54-year-old add some reinforcements to his side’s back line.
