International round-up: Frustration for Paul Pogba, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian excel

by Leo Nieboer

David de Gea: Had little to do aside from picking Stefan Ristovski’s thunderbolt out of the net as Spain claimed a 2-1 win in Macedonia.

Sergio Romero: Maintained his impressive clean sheet record during Jorge Sampaoli’s first game in charge with a solid display as Argentina claimed an efficient 1-0 win over Brazil in Melbourne.

Matteo Darmian: Produced a pair of composed, no-nonsense displays at right back as Italy claimed comfortable wins and, more importantly, clean sheets against Ecuador and Liechtenstein.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan: Didn’t see much of the ball during Armenia’s 4-1 defeat to Montenegro but still managed to provide a smart assist for Ruslan Koryan after 89 minutes.

Eric Bailly: Produced an unusually shaky display as Ivory Coast, still wracked by the shock passing of Cheik Tiote, fell to a 3-2 defeat to minnows Guinea.

Marcus Rashford: Produced a few clever touches during England’s 2-2 draw with Scotland but looked understandably jaded following a season that saw him make 53 appearances.

Chris Smalling: Looked decidedly shaky at the back, giving the ball away on too many occasions – something that nearly transpired in ignominious defeat as Scotland claimed two late goals following a continual failure to clear the lines amongst Gareth Southgate’s back four.

Daley Blind: The Dutchman, even during the height of a furious encounter with a big rival, hardly ever looks troubled on the ball, and Luxembourg barely laid a glove on him – or indeed Holland’s entire defence – as the Oranje ran out comfortable 5-0 winners.

Paul Pogba: Looked to exploit pockets of space whenever he could and looked characteristically imposing on the ball but couldn’t prevent a lacklustre France from losing 2-1 in Sweden.

Marouane Fellaini: Followed up his winning goal against the Czech Republic last week with a dominant display as Belgium cruised to a 2-0 win over Estonia.
