Arsenal monitoring Chris Smalling’s situation at Manchester United – report

by Leo Nieboer

Arsenal are keeping a close eye on Chris Smalling this summer as the arrival of Victor Lindelof looks set to plunge his Manchester United career into doubt, according to reports.

The club’s official website confirmed last Saturday that a deal worth £30.7m had been agreed between Benfica and Man United for the 22-year-old.

Smalling, on the other hand, will be sold by Jose Mourinho this summer and has already attracted the attention of several Premier League sides.

And according to the Sun‘s Martin Blackburn, Arsene Wenger will keep a close eye on the Englishman’s situation this summer as he looks to return his side to the Champions League next season.

There is probably a small part of you, a United fan, that doesn’t want to see Smalling go – primarily because, after all, he has produced some truly powerful performances at the back, with the most recent one coming in the Europa League final. And then, of course, was that incredible final season under Louis van Gaal. Make no mistake: on his day, the Englishman can be imperious.

But this is an attitude that, in the long run, pushes United further away from the right path under Mourinho. How many players over the last four years have failed to impose themselves whilst just about managing to keep their place? We have, somewhat unfortunately, settled for mediocrity and inconsistency as supporters, but the bar has been set higher by Mourinho and Smalling, in turn, must leave along with this destructive mindset.
