Roma set to rival Inter Milan in pursuit of Matteo Darmian this summer – report

Roma will join Serie A rivals Inter Milan in the race to sign Matteo Darmian this summer, according to reports from Italy.

The 27-year-old, who stood out in the Europa League final, noted he was happy at Old Trafford just days before his representatives held “important” talks with the club last month.

Inter expressed keen interest in signing the Italian during last season’s January transfer window but Mourinho was reportedly quick to obstruct any move taking place.

And according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Roma will rival Inter in their pursuit of the full-back during the summer.

The demise of Luke Shaw and injury to Marcos Rojo back in April gave Darmian – a solid but unspectacular influence under Mourinho up to that point – a real chance to impose himself on the starting XI, and his most recent performance, against Ajax, would have stuck in the 54-year-old’s head.

He was more than solid; he was, in fact, solid in that unmistakeable Italian way – disciplined, physically imposing, equipped with a special kind of nous that stopped the youth of Ajax firmly in their tracks. It wasn’t necessary pretty, but there was something majestic about it.

Make no mistake: if Darmian can carry that form into pre-season, he could drive Shaw out of the club completely.
