From Italy: Manchester United agree fee with AS Monaco for Fabinho

Manchester United and AS Monaco have agreed a fee €35m plus €5m in bonuses for Brazilian midfielder Fabinho, according to reports from Italy.

The 23-year-old, who was instrumental in determining Monaco’s Ligue 1 triumph last season, has reportedly pin-pointed Man United as his first choice option this summer.

Jose Mourinho has outlined his desire for a defensive midfielder to free up Paul Pogba ahead of the 2017/18 but, according to other reports from Italy, has faced competition for Fabinho from both Real Madrid and Juventus.

But according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, a fee has been agreed ahead of a deal to make the Brazilian Mourinho’s second signing of the summer.

It was thought that, just like last season, securing a central midfielder would prove the trickiest signing for Mourinho, with various names – Eric Dier and Nemanja Matic being the most prominent – being thrown around.

Then again, the 54-year-old’s interest in Fabinho – just like Victor Lindelof – precedes this summer. He was, in fact, on his list of supplementary options last summer but with Michael Carrick seemingly embarking on his last year in a United shirt, securing the services of a player like Fabinho – imposing, controlled, diligent on the ball – early on this summer has always been crucial.
