Fabinho’s links to Manchester United intensified this week following reports in Italy which suggested Man United had agreed a €35m + €5m bonuses fee with AS Monaco for the Brazilian midfielder.
But given the reports came from an unknown journalist and were in an Italian newspaper despite being about a Brazilian football playing in the French League and his potential move to an English club, there were plenty of sceptics.
So, when Fabrizio Romano pops up – of course, a member of Gianluca di Marzio’s writing staff – ears have perked up again.
Romano reports that Fabinho not only has an offer from United but Man City and Paris St Germain as well, with Juventus sniffing around after Max Allegri identified him as an ideal signing.
It really should come as no surprise to hear that so many clubs are circling around Fabinho because there aren’t many better pure defensive midfielders available this summer, which makes it all the more frustrating United have somewhat dithered and not pushed a move for him quicker.
Romano also suggests Fabinho will not go for anything less than €45m and, again, I’m not surprised at that. When reports came out to suggest United had agreed a deal worth €35m upfront and €5m in performance bonuses, I thought it was brilliant business. Hopefully that proves to be the case and United land their man.
If we lose out on Fabinho it will be a massive blow as far as I’m concerned because regardless of who we sign instead, Fabinho’s performances at AS Monaco in their route to the UEFA Champions League semi-final and Ligue 1 title show how good he could be at United.
