Darmian, 27, has been linked with a move to Juventus following the officially confirmed exit of Dani Alves as the Italian champions are in need of a new right-back.
While he had a poor start to the year, Darmian excelled in the second half of the season and became one of Mourinho’s most dependable players which he embodied with a wonderful performance in the 2017 Europa League final.
There’s never been a hint that Darmian wants to leave the club but could it happen? We’ll take it with a pinch of salt because it’s The Sun but it does raise an interesting point about what Darmian actually wants to do.
With the 2018 World Cup coming up and having recently married in Italy, Darmian may well see a return to Italy – especially to Serie A champions Juventus – as the perfect move for his career right now. Plus, his wife will certainly be encouraging him to return to their homeland Italy, so he’ll have pressure from his family that’s for sure.
United certainly shouldn’t be selling Darmian. He proved his worth towards the end of the season and a utility player like him – who can operate in both full-back positions as well as an emergency centre-back – is the sort of player who proves himself vital over the course of the season. If we sold him, we’d have to replace him and with so much else to do this summer I’d find it strange if Mourinho let him leave.
That being said, something which Mourinho has always stood by is that he will not stand in the way of any player who wants to leave. If Darmian does want to push a transfer, Mourinho will grant it to him.
