Paul Pogba reflects on Antoine Griezmann’s decision to stay at Atletico Madrid

by Leo Nieboer

Paul Pogba has spoken out about Antoine Griezmann’s decision to remain at Atletico Madrid, noting that he hoped his France teammate finds happiness wherever he ends up.

It was widely reported that, following Manchester United’s passage into the Champions League group stages, Griezmann would move to Old Trafford, with Pogba himself even alluding to an imminent arrival.

However, following Atletico’s failed appeal against a transfer ban, which ruled they couldn’t register new signings until next January, the Frenchman opted to remain with the Spanish side.

And Pogba, speaking to Telefoot, noted that he hoped the 25-year-old would go on to enjoy plenty of success under Diego Simeone.

“Griezmann? I wish for his happiness,”he said. “If that is at Atletico, at City, I will handle it. He is one of the best players in the world.

“If Zlatan is happy elsewhere, then I am happy for him.”

There was a magical week following victory in Stockholm when it looked like Griezmann was destined for a move to Old Trafford and, more pertinently, a potentially special relationship with Pogba, who has always benefitted from having strikers like the Frenchman keen on running in behind and exploiting as much space as possible.

But the upholding of Atletico’s ban and Mourinho’s sudden emphasis on securing an all-out striker swiftly put an end to all talk of a move to Old Trafford – which is, I have to admit, hugely upsetting. This is a world class striker, after all, capable of taking the game by the scruff of its neck and currently at the peak of his powers.

Then again, Alvaro Morata, who has a better goals per minute ratio than Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku, is not a bad alternative whatsoever.
