Manchester United closing in on Nemanja Matic transfer – report

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United could complete a move for Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic by the end of the week according to ESPN’s Mark Ogden.

Ogden, former writer for The Telegraph, is following up Manchester Evening News’ claims that Matic is the midfielder who Jose Mourinho wants to sign and Tiemoue Bakayoko’s imminent move to Stamford Bridge is considered the catalyst for Matic’s exit.

On the one hand we’ve got Gianluca di Marzio and other reputable journalists saying United are close to completing a deal for Fabinho. On the other, Ogden and MEN’s Samuel Luckhurst are banging the Matic to United drum. Who will Mourinho’s new defensive midfielder be? Well, Ogden is suggesting Matic could be a United player before the end of the week.

Is there a chance United could sign both Matic and Fabinho? On paper, I do think central midfield cover is where United need more depth than anywhere else because an injury to either Ander Herrera or Paul Pogba will leave us very short of options but with a new striker and arguably new winger needed, it would be a big task for Mourinho to bring in two central midfielders as well.

Matic would be a good signing, not as good as Fabinho though, and our midfield would definitely be better off with him in it but with so many different reports floating around we’re trying not to get ahead of ourselves just yet.
