The Guardian‘s Jamie Jackson confirmed earlier today that Jose Mourinho, keen on securing a Michael Carrick replacement, would sign Matic for the second time ahead of pre-season.
Antonio Conte’s imminent capture of AS Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko and desire to keep Cesc Fabregas in the fold has paved the way for the 28-year-old to link up with Mourinho once again.
And according to the Sun, Matic will undergo a medical over the next 48 hours and will become a Man United player in time pre-season, which begins on July 9.
United’s need for players hardened to the vicissitudes of life at the top was gloomily visible at times last season, and Mourinho has produced an emphatic response by signing Matic.
The Serb, with two Premier League titles in three seasons, is pure thunder: 6ft 4, legs like tree trunks, impossible to brush aside and growingly comfortable on the ball. He actually started out as a centre-back, but his all-round game was too brutish and effective to be wasted clearing crosses and chopping people down (although he does have a mastery over this as well).
Mark my words: he will – assuming he does complete the move – prove to be United’s most important signing of the summer.
