Manchester United are set to launch a £12m bid for Middlesbrough and Netherlands midfielder Marten De Roon, according to reports.
The 26-year-old, despite seeing his side relegated to the Championship, enjoyed an impressive campaign in midfield following his £12m move from Atlanta last summer.
He was especially impressive during Man United’s 3-1 win at the Riverside, prompting Jose Mourinho to note: “Boro have a good team, a solid midfield, this kid De Roon is phenomenal, his work-rate is phenomenal, they’re solid and they play direct.”
And according to the Mirror‘s Marc Issacs, the Portuguese will follow up his admiration of the youngster with a formal bid.
That win at the Riverside was more or less one way traffic. United took advantage of Boro’s feebleness in front of goal by using Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata in a more direct way than normal, bringing Marcus Rashford into the game and ultimately wreaking havoc.
But for all of the home side’s ineptitude in front of goal, their midfield core was packed with energy and grit, and at the heart of that – especially after United went 2-0 up – was De Roon. He is one of those players capable of running all game, popping up everywhere and always looking to have an effect on proceedings.
Mourinho clearly likes the idea of having the Dutchman under his wing as a squad player that he can rely on when it comes to maintaining a high tempo during what will be another physically testing campaign.
