Phil Jones has expressed his excitement ahead of what promises to be a frantic pre-season schedule for Manchester United this month.
Jose Mourinho‘s men will fly out to Los Angeles for a clash with LA Galaxy before taking on Real Salt Lake for the first time ever in the coming weeks.
They will then take on Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona in the Champions Cup ahead of flying to Oslo to face Valerenga IF and then on to Dublin for their final pre-season clash with UC Sampdoria.
And Jones, speaking to the club’s official website, believes that such a hectic schedule will serve as a boost ahead of next season.
“The more matches you play, the more match-fit you are and seven games will give everyone a chance to get minutes under their belts,” he said. “You need everyone at a good level for the start of the season.”
“Of course, they’re big names and they have big-name players in their sides. We’ve often played against these kinds of teams in pre-season and it’s exciting for the fans in the States to come to the games.
“It’s also good for some of the young players who travel with us to experience matches like that. You can take a lot of positives from pre-season and look forward to the start of the season.”
Man United will also travel to Macedonia for a clash with Champions League winners Real Madrid on August 8, meaning Mourinho’s men will play a total of eight games before their Premier League opener with West Ham United.
Pre-season, for me at least, is about the fringe players – Chris Smalling is a good example – and how they can respond to the noise of the past month or so.
