Wayne Rooney’s destination for next season remains uncertain – report

Wayne Rooney‘s destination for next season remains unclear following a season on the periphery under Jose Mourinho, according to reports.

The 31-year-old admitted soon after the Europa League final, during which he was used as a token 89th minute substitute, that he would make a “footballing decision” over his future.

Gary Neville recently pointed out that, just like in 2013, uncertainty surrounding Rooney’s future as Manchester United prepare for pre-season would be unproductive.

But according to the BBC’s Simon Stone, uncertainty continues to loom over where the Englishman will be playing next season.

Rooney appears to be in something of a rut. He is no longer good enough to play at this level, but any move to a lesser club would be unlikely due to his crippling wage demands.

The only exception would be China, you sense, but the combination of a recent 100 per cent tax on foreign signings imposed by the Beijing government, Rooney’s desire to remain in contention for the England side and probable reluctance to uproot his young family to the Far East rules out that prospect as well.

As pre-season approaches, with Man United jetting off to Los Angeles on Sunday, another season as a token bench player is starting to feel like a real possibility.
