Ander Herrera may have claimed the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award last season for his rampaging midfield performances, but it turns out he has something else up his sleeve.
The Spaniard, following two years of drifting in and out of form under Louis van Gaal, found his calling under Jose Mourinho, featuring as a powerful midfield enforcer alongside the more creative Paul Pogba.
There were times last term, at the very height of his brilliance, when it felt like he was forming into a complete midfielder.
However, his latest Instagram post shows another aspect to his game that the world hasn’t seen yet, and he was quick to warn David de Gea, Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira that they ought to be on guard ahead of pre-season.
This is a fantastic pluck. Low, hard and angling to his left, Herrera makes easy work of it – which, on sand, deserves extra credit. Being a goalkeeper on this terrain usually means minimal traction from which to spring in one direction, alongside a probable face-full of the nasty stuff.
It looks like Wayne Rooney, a well-known goalkeeping enthusiast, may face some competition from another outfield player between the sticks, but I don’t think Dave needs to worry too much.
