Wayne Rooney joining Everton by the end of the week – report

Wayne Rooney has been taken out of Manchester United’s pre-season tour plans as he will be joining Everton by the end of the week, according to Neil Custis.

His name has been removed from the travelling party, which departs for the USA on Sunday, July 9 as he’ll be meeting with Ronald Koeman soon to finalise a move.

The Englishman came through the youth ranks at Everton before moving to Old Trafford in 2004 and it looks like he’s set to return to his boyhood club.

He’s lost his automatic starter status for club and country since Jose Mourinho took over last summer and a return to Merseyside will see him hoping for more game time ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Rooney has always stated that he would only ever play for United or Everton in the Premier League and it seems like United would be willing to let Rooney leave on a free transfer if he does not seek to claim wages for the final two years of his contract at Old Trafford.

Although Mourinho claimed he’d love to have Rooney at Old Trafford next season, it seems like the perfect time for him to see off his incredible career as a United player.
