Ed Woodward has shocked the world by prizing Romelu Lukaku away from Chelsea’s grasp and leaving Real Madrid dumbfounded in the process.
The Belgian will have his medical in Los Angeles, the destination of Manchester United’s opening pre-season tour game, ahead of completing a £75m move worth £200,000 a week.
His arrival will, no doubt, turn the heads of other players; Jose Mourinho is unquestionably building something very exciting.
And so, here is a potential XI featuring Lukaku at No.9 with other regularly named targets lining up alongside the Belgian.
Mourinho’s best squads have always been clearly defined: attack and defence simultaneously mingling perfectly whilst also remaining very much two different arsenals, with the essential pivot between the two coming in the form of Claude Makelele and Xabi Alonso in the past.
This time around, we have Nemanja Matic – a proven asset in that department under Mourinho – acting as a battering ram and springboard for the likes of Paul Pogba and Fabinho to switch between defence and attack with mesmerising alacrity, freeing up Marcus Rashford and Ivan Perisic out wide to deliver quick service to the monstrously deadly Lukaku.
That will be the counter-attacking model Mourinho wants to employ next term, and it could be immense.
