Manchester United will continue to pursue Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier after their capture of Chelsea target Romelu Lukaku ruled out the prospect of Nemanja Matic coming to Old Trafford, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho turned his attentions towards Matic, who was reportedly in line for a £40m move to Old Trafford, after baulking at the £50m valuation given for Dier.
And according to the Telegraph’s Matt Law, United will now turn their attentions to settling an agreement with Spurs for Dier.
Antonio Conte is raging. Lukaku wasn’t just his first choice this summer; he was supposed to be the nucleus around which the Italian would build a side capable of defending their crown next season. Now he has to revert to square one.

The new season is still over a month away but Mourinho has already landed a blow on his biggest rival, but it has come at a cost: downgrading from Matic to Dier.
More mobile, sure, and indeed more of a long-term investment capable of improving as the years go by, but whether he can master a holding midfield role with the same consistency and verve remains to be seen.
