Romelu Lukaku has announced his squad number at Manchester United as he completes his summer move from Everton.
He had been continuously linked with a move and the club had announced his deal over the weekend as he looked to complete his medical in Los Angeles and link up with the players for the pre-season tour.
The Belgian will become United’s eighth No.9, taking over from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was released by the club after picking up a serious knee injury.
Radamel Falcao and Anthony Martial recently wore the number and he’ll be looking to build his own legacy at Old Trafford, leading the side up front.
Speaking about the shirt number, Lukaku said: “Strikers play with No. 9. It’s a nice number, and I asked the permission of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.”
It’s great that he’s been officially announced as we’ve needed a striker of his quality, as he scored 25 Premier League goals last season.
He brings something to the side which United have lacked recently, especially last season as the squad made plenty of chances but lacked the end product.
Many have criticised Lukaku for his tendency to score against smaller sides, however, that is something United really struggled with last season and injecting someone with the talent to change the game is what Jose Mourinho needed to do.
He’s Premier League proven and once he plays with an improved United side around him, he’ll be able to put the goals away.
