He was left out of Jose Mourinho‘s squad for the pre-season tour as the rest of the players flew out to Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon.
The 24-year-old has a year left on his contract and spent the second half of last season at Villa, making an impression on Steve Bruce as he looked to make a deal since the end of the season.
Johnstone still seems committed to his future at Old Trafford, but won’t be picking up much game time on the first-team as he’s with Joel Pereira behind David de Gea and Sergio Romero in the pecking order.
It seems Mourinho also rates Pereira higher as he gave him his Premier League debut in the final game of the season against Crystal Palace and also including him in the pre-seaosn squad, as he previously said he will be the best Portuguese goalkeeper of the next generation.
There’s still time for Johnstone but if he impresses once again then we could see Villa come back with a permanent deal to sign him next summer, especially as his contract runs out.
