Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Anderlecht’s Leander Dendoncker as a potential option in midfield this summer, according to reports.
Dendoncker enjoyed a superb campaign with Anderlecht last season and even netted a late equaliser against Man United during the first leg of their Europa League quarter final tie with Mourinho’s men.
And according to Calcio Mercato, the 22-year-old has emerged as a potential option for the Portuguese ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.
Dendoncker will not be the first on Mourinho’s list, of course, but the Belgian – whilst largely overpowered by Pogba in both legs – demonstrated signs of the kind of work rate demanded at this level.
His goal against United, for example, came off the back of a surging, powerful and indeed somewhat hopeful run into the box, the ball landing perfectly in front of him to nod past De Gea.
The fact that, even after being pummelled by Pogba and Michael Carrick for over 80 minutes, he still had the chutzpah to bomb forward and produce such a seismic moment deserves some recognition. Supporters will be keen to see how their side’s defensive midfield – the last piece in Mourinho’s jigsaw this summer – shapes up ahead of the new campaign.
