Manchester United have abandoned their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier after it became clear that the North London side would not sell the Englishman this summer, according to reports.
And according to the Daily Mirror, United have given up on Dier as a potential option after Spurs outright rejected all approaches made for the midfielder.
Making approaches for Matic and Dier, both integral defensive midfielders for last year’s top two sides, was never going to be routine, especially with Mourinho being the one interested, and it seems like both targets are categorically off the table.
This will be difficult to swallow for Mourinho. Every Premier League side he has managed contained an immovable, sturdy midfield stalwart capable of stemming the tide and generating impetus from deep, and he will need to remain vigilant over the next couple of months as he continues to search for somebody capable of fulfilling that role.
