Jose Mourinho claims he’s not happy with Manchester United’s transfer window and is ready to accept signing just one more player before the end of the window.
He signed Romelu Lukaku from Everton and Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, however, moves for Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic and a top-class defensive midfielder have proven to be very difficult.
Man United are said to be within £5m of meeting Inter’s valuation of Croatia international Perisic, however, as a deal has not been reached, he has China on the Italian club’s preseason tour of China.
Inter have also tried to stall a deal and find a potential replacement, identifying a loan deal for Anthony Martial if Mourinho really wants to bring Perisic to Old Trafford.
Speaking about his targets, Mourinho admits he could be forced to settle for one more.
“We always want more,” he said. “We always feel there is room to improve, and I cannot say that I am happy with our transfer window.
“What I can also say is that it is a difficult transfer window and I don’t blame anyone — it is just a reality of things. The market is going in such a direction that many players are difficult to get, not to say impossible.
“Every club is powerful and they don’t want to sell or their demands are really high, so the market is difficult.”
Mourinho went on to add: “Everton started really strong in the market without the Lukaku money. AC Milan, without selling players, are buying nonstop, so it depends on the moment, the objective, maybe on new owners.
“What I will say is that, a long time ago, we thought about four players to strengthen our squad, but it is really hard to do it. If we do the third and forget the fourth, I would be quite happy with that because I know it is difficult.”
He’s confirmed his objective is still to sign two more players but even if he does land them, they will have lost important time in the pre-season to adapt to the move.
United definitely need a new defensive midfielder and a new winger would be ideal too. For me, it would be a real failure of a window if we failed to bring in a new defensive mid even though we’ve signed Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof, that’s how much we need one to supplement Michael Carrick in that role.
