Juan Mata could miss games against Manchester City and Real Madrid

Juan Mata could miss Manchester United’s next two tour games against Manchester City and Real Madrid, according to the Daily Mail.

He suffered an ankle injury that triggered a bizarre turn of events in Utah, limping off the pitch clearly unhappy with Sebastian Saucedo’s challenge, when Antonio Valencia retaliated with a messy tackle from behind on the Real Salt Lake midfielder.

Jose Mourinho refused the referee’s request and a similar plea from Real coach Mike Petke, to which Valencia was then shown a red card.

Mata was on United’s flight back to their Los Angeles training base straight after the game but there are doubts he’ll be fit for our upcoming fixtures.

United have the Manchester derby in Houston in the early hours of Friday morning and the clash with Real Madrid in Santa Clara at the weekend.

Following the Real game, United’s final fixture in the US is against Barcelona in Maryland, they then fly to Norway to face Valerenga on July 30 and get to Dublin three days later to face Sampdoria.

Mata’s absence will be a massive blow as he looks to make his mark on the team and cement his place in the side, but there’s no doubt he’ll be able to bounce back.
