Ryan Giggs discusses Manchester United’s title credentials for next season

by Leo Nieboer

Ryan Giggs believes that Manchester United have the strength in depth needed to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

Jose Mourinho‘s men, inundated by a lack of composure against lesser teams at home, slumped to sixth spot in the league last season.

But in spite of a poor domestic campaign, they will take inspiration from the way they battled to win both the League Cup and Europa League last season.

And Giggs, speaking earlier this week, has tipped Man Unite to compete with Manchester City for the Premier League next year.

“I can see United and City definitely contending for the league,” he said.

“It’s Jose’s second season with United. Last season they had the best squad and I think this year they’ve got the best squad again.

“They haven’t necessarily got the best XI, but their strength in depth is huge.”

There are, of course, a number of reasons to feel confident of a title challenge next year.

Romelu Lukaku’s addition serves as an important nod towards eradicating United’s neurosis in front of goal against lesser sides; Paul Pogba will benefit enormously from a proper pre-season and no major tournament; Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly could be a golden partnership; a litany of youngsters – or youngish players – will continue to develop.

And most of all, there is the Special One – a man capable of unapologetically thrusting himself to the very forefront of the drama that is the Premier League. Always in the headlines, always the villain, and very often the man with the silverware in May. How he conducts this Premier League campaign will, you sense, shape the rest of his time at Old Trafford.
