Daley Blind gives his thoughts on Romelu Lukaku’s Manchester United transfer

Daley Blind has heaped praise on the recent signing of Romelu Lukaku, noting that Manchester United’s new No.9 possesses a superb work rate and eager eye for goal.

The club announced last week that Lukaku, who claimed 25 goals last season, had completed a £75m move from Everton to become Man United’s second signing of the transfer window.

And he didn’t take long to claim his first United goal, netting the winner against Real Salt Lake City on Monday after 38 minutes.

And Blind, when asked about the Belgian, was quick to enthuse about the impression he has made ever since linking up with the first team squad.

“[Lukaku] is a great signing, a great player and a great person as well, now that I have met him for a while,” he said.

“He works very hard, he is very eager to score goals and very eager to help his team-mates and create chances, so I am very happy he scored his first goal and I think there are many more to come.”

First impressions are not everything in football. A player can appear ostensibly awful at first and then go on to thrive, and vice versa. Sergio Romero is a good example.

But we should not ignore the influence already commanded by the 24-year-old: he looks settled, jovial with teammates and, most importantly, deeply determined to succeed. Jose Mourinho needed an outright goalscorer following Zlatan Ibrahimovic‘s departure – somebody who would sulk and throw their weight around if they didn’t score – and he has exactly that in Lukaku.
