Reports have claimed that Inter, notably obstinate in their negotiations for Perisic, would only sell the 29-year-old if the Frenchman went the other way.
And according to Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport, the youngster has no desire whatsoever to join Inter this summer.
I cannot help but find this talk regarding Martial being offered a safety net elsewhere slightly insulting. Such a narrative essentially suggests that the Frenchman can no longer cope at this level – that last season was a death knell rather than a small bump in a long road.
This is obviously wrong, and instead a gloomy indicator of the alacrity with which widespread opinion can change. Under Louis van Gaal he was indispensable; a year later, he is an “outcast”.
But any Man United fan will quickly tell you that Martial’s unquestionable talent has not been wiped out by one difficult campaign. Losing him at this stage would be nothing short of criminal.
