Manchester United and Tottenham are keeping a close eye on Gaziantepspor attacking midfielder Serkan Bakan this summer after the 16-year-old impressed last season.
Bakan, who features as an attacking midfielder, made history last season by becoming the youngest ever player to score in the top flight of Turkish football during a 4-1 defeat to Antalyaspor.
Gaziantepspor are unlikely to keep Bakan – a regular for the Turkey Under 16s – this summer after suffering relegation from the Turkish Super Lig
And according to Bakan’s representative, Ibrahim Polat, both United and Spurs have expressed an interest in acquiring the youngster’s services.
“Manchester United and Tottenham have been scouting Bakan,” he said.
“Several clubs from Germany have also been keeping tabs following his debut season in the Super Lig. He already has goals in the cup and league. Serkan is a special talent, so it is natural for there to be a lot of interest.”
We should stress that Bakan only played a total of two games last season: a 4-0 defeat and a 4-1 defeat, with Bakan only playing six minutes of the former. But his presence around the first team, alongside being eventually handed a chance to play, points towards an array of qualities that considerably bely his age.
And he will not, you sense, stick around in the second tier of Turkish football next season, especially with the offers set to come his way. Perhaps he ought to acknowledge during his decision making process that United handed a debut to a 16-year-old of their own back in May.
